Seahawks march back from down 12 to live another day

WASHINGTON D.C. - The Seahawks men’s basketball team prevailed after being down 12 with less than 13 minutes to play to keep their season alive. In the win or go home single elimination CAA tournament, Nick Farrar and the rest of the Seahawks rallied to defeat the Drexel Dragons 73-68.
"Kenan House is the Historic Kenan House, home of UNCW's chancellor, is a 7,500-square-foot Neoclassical Revival dwelling constructed in 1911 and deeded to the university by the Kenan family in 1968. It stands on Market Street beside the Wise Alumni House."

The Chancellor’s home, also known as the Kenan House, has a history that is especially vital to learn during Black History Month. For the students and faculty who don’t know it, it’s time to go to school.

The Asian Heritage Cultural Center (AHCC), located in the Fisher University Union room 1002, officially opened in September of 2022. The center serves as a space for students to interact with and learn about the various cultures in the Asian and Pacific Islander (AAPI) community. The ribbon cutting ceremony took place on Feb. 9 and marked the grand opening of the space. Since its opening, the AHCC has served as a welcoming meet-up spot for UNCW students, both within the AAPI community and the general population

In honor of Rosa Parks' birthday, Feb. 4, Wave Transit in Wilmington, North Carolina reserved a seat through Feb. 6 in the front of the bus in remembrance of her contribution to the Civil Rights Movement. The seat contained a placard describing Park’s role in desegregating public transportation.

The UNCW softball team started their season today with games at home against Purdue Fort Wayne, East Carolina and Virginia Tech. The reigning CAA champion Seahawks are coming off of a 32-15 season and begin this year at the top of the CAA preseason poll.

This usually leads to a lot of takeout food and eating out at restaurants. But there are other options! Microwaves can be used to cook meals, not just heat up leftovers. The three ideas below are a few of my favorite dorm-friendly meals. They are easy to make, and low cost too—perfect for college students.

UNCW’s Studio Art Faculty Biennial opened Thursday, Jan. 12, giving visitors a view into the creative process and creations of some of the university’s studio art faculty. The sixteen exhibiting artists display artworks pondering personal themes as well as global ones in a multitude of different artistic mediums including quilting, metalsmithing, painting, photography and ceramics.

For the second year in a row, the UNCW men's basketball team has set a new school record for consecutive wins in a season. After thirteen straight victories, the Seahawks have not lost a game since the Nov. 18 loss at the University of Connecticut, who is now ranked among the nation's best teams.

Just two months ago, UNCW’s Upperman African American Cultural Center was awarded “Center of the Year” by the Association for Black Culture Centers (ABCC) at their annual conference from Nov. 3-5. The center also received the “Kuumba Innovative Program of the Year” award for its “Juneteenth Teach-in” event, and program coordinator Ashlee Fleming was named the “New Professional of the Year,” as well.

This October, WILMA Magazine announced the 35 finalists selected for the WILMA’s 2022 Women to Watch Awards, which included four current UNCW faculty. Dana Stachowiak, Director of the Gender Studies & Research Center and Associate Professor of Curriculum Studies, was one of those four finalists and was nominated in the education category.
