Join The Other Side of improv

Improvisation can be found anywhere. College campuses, apartments and parties are popular places for unscripted conversations to take place.

Six years ago, several UNCW drama students decided to form a group in order to expand their improv skills and began performing for audiences.

The show is one that can be compared to the popular ‘Who’s Line is it Anyway’ and other improvisation acts on networks such as ABC Family and Comedy Central.

Long-time member Brian Prince, who heard about the group through a friend when he moved here from Boone, N.C., said he has been with the team for five of the six years.

‘The Other Side’ team is always looking for additional members and will hold auditions at City Stage Monday, September 5 at 6 p.m.

“These auditions just give us an opportunity to see what kind of interest the community has with the group,” Prince said. “It’s open to anyone who’s interested; the more diversity we have, the better. Every person who is involved with this group brings something different to the stage.”

Prince noted that he believes it is very important to let everybody in the area know about the group. With the eclectic mass of people from Downtown, UNCW and Wrightsville Beach, diverse talent can be found anywhere.

“This group is all about having fun, making a fool out of yourself, thinking on the spot and becoming somebody else,” Prince said.

John Gray, another member of the team, has been involved with The Other Side for about a year. The 2002 UNCW graduate said he heard about the group through his roommate.

“It’s been great so far,” Gray said. “Being a part of the team and doing the shows are just a lot of fun. It’s like playing a game, being a kid again, making up voices, characters and just having fun while making others laugh.”

Gray mentioned that people who come to auditions don’t necessarily have to think of themselves as ‘funny’ to snag a spot on the team.

“Improv is about thinking up ideas on the spot, which we do everyday,” Gray said. “You don’t have to be overly hilarious but if you can hold a conversation and by feeding off others, the comedy will emerge.”

‘The Other Side’ performs weekly Tuesday nights at 9 p.m at Level 5.
