Diamond Hawks sweep Georgia State

The UNCW baseball team recovered from two tough midweek losses to N.C. State and Campbell by completing a three-game sweep of Colonial Athletic Association foe Georgia State.

The perfect weekend pushed the Seahawks’ conference ‘resume’ to 16-1-1 (26-7-1 overall) as well as gave them a slight chance to retain their national ranking as they remain the CAA’s top team.

Though the Seahawks exited the series undefeated, it was hardly easy as each of the three games was decided by a single run.

The win streak began on Friday night when extra baseball was needed to separate the Panthers and Seahawks in a 6-5 battle. The Seahawks opened up a 5-1 lead before the Panthers fought back to level the score on a squeeze bunt in the top of the ninth inning.

When the Seahawks could not grab the go-ahead run in the bottom of the ninth, extra innings were required. After a scoreless 10th, senior Daniel Hargrave led off the bottom of the 11th with a triple. Three batters later, Hargrave was brought home for the winning run on a balk by Panthers pitcher David Ferrer giving the Seahawks the odd 6-5 victory.

Freshman reliever Stephen Harrold grabbed the win for the Seahawks, raising his record to 2-2.

Saturday afternoon saw a back and forth contest in which Seahawks finally took control when senior Jes Snyder smashed a bases-loaded single to center scoring two in the eighth to give the Seahawks a 9-8 advantage.

The Seahawks were able to pick up an extra insurance run later in the eighth that eventually became the winning run as the Panthers nearly fought back in the ninth, making the final score 10-9. Sophomore Kyle Lewis recorded the win for the Seahawks and Harrold secured his fifth save of the season.

With the series clinched, the brooms were out Sunday afternoon at Brooks Field as the Seahawks went in search of the sweep. After being well in control for most of the game, the Seahawks let an 8-4 ninth inning lead slip away as the Panthers posted four runs in the final inning to level score.

However, senior Mark Carver stepped up in the bottom of the ninth and roped a one-out single to left, scoring sophomore Bobby Leeper from third for the 9-8 win. Harrold completed what was a busy weekend for him by tallying another win, giving him two and a save in the series.

The three wins raised Seahawks head coach Mark Scalf’s career win total to 539, leaving him just nine shy of Bill Brooks’ all-time mark.

The Seahawks return to action this weekend with another three-game series at Delaware before returning to North Carolina to battle in-state rivals ECU on Tuesday in Greenville.
