Men’s soccer clinches back-to-back titles

With their 5-0 demolition of Drexel Monday, the UNC Wilmington men’s soccer team wrapped up their second Colonial Athletic Association regular season title in as many years. The No. 21 Seahawks stretched their winning streak to four matches as well as remained undefeated in CAA play with a conference record of 8-0-2 (12-2-3 overall).

The win put the Seahawks on 26 points in the CAA, four clear of second-placed William & Mary with just one regular season match remaining. With the regular season title comes the major advantage of hosting the four-team CAA tournament, an advantage the Seahawks were unable make use of last season after being dumped out of the semifinals by Northeastern in penalty kicks.

Last week, the Seahawks were included in the nation’s top 25, at No. 23, for the first time since early 2005, and they showed why they were there, winning all three matches last week to vault themselves back to the top of the CAA standings.

After capturing their first ever win in Harrisburg, Va. with a 2-0 victory over James Madison, the Seahawks returned home to down George Mason and Drexel in the space of three days.

A 2-1 win over George Mason Saturday gave the Seahawks some sense of revenge as the defeat effectively ended the Patriots’ push for the CAA tournament. Last season, the Seahawks were forced to watch from the sidelines as the Patriots won the CAA tournament title, as well as a bid to the NCAA tournament, on UNCW’s home field.

The Seahawks rounded off their regular season home slate with the convincing 5-0 rout of Drexel. Goals from Etienne Boulanger (2), Brian Harrison, Daniel Roberts and Kirk Hudgins lifted the Seahawks to the win and their second CAA regular title in program history.

Roberts’ goal was his second in three matches earning him a spot in Topsoccerdrawer.com’s Team-of-the-Week. The junior midfielder also provided the assist for Allen Lomax’s winner against George Mason.

In addition, junior goalkeeper Brock Duckworth collected CAA Player-of-the-Week honors by posting his fifth and sixth shutouts of the season while allowing only a single goal in three matches.

With only a trip to Hofstra remaining before returning home to host the CAA tournament, the Seahawks will look to continue their scintillating league form and complete the CAA slate unscathed.

The CAA tournament will be held at the UNCW Soccer Stadium Nov. 13 and 15 with the Seahawks as the top seed. William & Mary and Northeastern are currently tied for second and have secured trips to the Port City. The fourth and final slot will be filled by either Hofstra or Old Dominion. With only one match remaining, Old Dominion sits two points behind the Pride, needing a win as well as some help from UNCW, who can potentially knock Hofstra out of tournament contention with a win Saturday.
