Obama might be leaving office, but surely not service

As November swiftly approaches, we are all abuzz about who will become the 45th President of the United States; however, it is important to reflect back on those who came before and remember what they accomplished during their time in office. While President Barack Obama has received mixed reviews on his ideas and policies, he has done some great things as president.

To start, President Obama was able to get a health care reform in motion by signing the Affordable Care Act of 2010. This measure provided nearly 32 million uninsured American people with health care, reported the Washington Monthly.

While Obama was taking health care head on, he was also in office for the assassination of terrorist leader Osama bin Laden in 2011. That was a huge deal for the United States and was something that some people felt was closure after 9/11.

Not only did he aid in catching a major terrorist, but he also made major changes for the LGBTQ community by making it legal for same sex couples to wed. According to CBS, Obama stated, “No matter who you are, here in America, you’re free to marry the person you love because the freedom to marry is now the law in all 50 states.” This was also a big deal, leaving many filled with joy that they would be able to marry the person they love, and watch others do the same.

President Obama, despite those who criticized him, has been a good president for this country. While not everything he planned played out as he had hoped it would, he still led our country by making hard choices and meaningful decisions.

Not to mention, he is kind of a cool guy, from what appears in the media. He has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon. Overall, he just seems to be a very down to earth and personable guy. His wife, Michelle Obama, just spoke at NC State University and people went nuts for her. The first lady has also been a major advocate for healthy lifestyles and higher education. Together they make a pretty kick-butt presidential power couple.

Through it all, I have consistently found President Obama to be a good leader. Being a good leader does not mean that all of your ideas work, nor does it mean that you are successful in everything. Being a good leader is comforting people in times of need, providing hope, ideas and enthusiasm. He always appeared so humble yet confident in his speeches and interviews.

I doubt that the White House will be the last stop for the Obama’s. People like them do not stop helping and improving the country after their “time” is up. For them it was not about the title, it was about making changes and making the United States better for everyone, even in little ways. This surely will not be the last of them and I look forward to see what kind of differences they make together moving forward.
