Seahawks fall to Blue Devils

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNCW women’s soccer (2-2) fell to the Duke Blue Devils (8-4-2) 3-0 Saturday afternoon in the UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Duke dominated the game with 15 shots to UNCW’s one. Sophomore goalkeeper Ruthie Jones made one save for the Blue Devils, while freshman goalkeeper Blair Barefoot tallied four saves after coming in for redshirt sophomore Anna Johnston in the first half.

Senior midfielder/forward Tess Boade put the Blue Devils on the board first in the 7th minute with a chip shot from outside the box, assisted by junior midfielder Mackenzie Pluck and junior defender Delaney Graham. Boade then assisted senior defender Caitlin Cosme in scoring a header off a corner kick in the 27th minute. Duke put the nail in the coffin in the 49th minute when Cosme assisted freshman forward Grace Watkins in scoring their third, and final goal.

The game was pretty even in fouls, with Duke committing 10 and UNCW committing eight.

UNCW will take to the road on Saturday March 13, to play Elon (1-0) in their conference opener. Kickoff is set for 6 p.m.
