Analysis
The UNCW men’s basketball team was projected to finish last in the CAA this season. However, through the first 24 games, the Seahawks have shown an immense amount of hope for the future.
In almost all individual categories, the Seahawks were led by senior guard Chad Tomko. Clocking in the most minutes, most points, assists and steals the past two seasons, Tomko is unquestionably the team’s leader.
The departure of last season’s center John Fields has hurt UNCW statistically in the post. This year, the Seahawks have fewer rebounds and blocks per game.
The increase in steals per game, free throw and field goal percentages have all contributed to their success this season, as well as the decrease in turnovers and points allowed per game.
Tomko will continue to anchor the squad through his final year at UNCW, while junior guard Trevor Deloach and sophomore forward Keith Rendleman have become big assets for the team.
Deloach is leading the team in three point percentage at 48.9. Rendleman follows Tomko in scoring average, field goals made, steals and minutes played while leading in offensive rebounds and blocked shots.
Perhaps the most glaring difference is the attendance in Trask Coliseum so far this season. There are about 500 more fans cheering on the Seahawks this season and an average of 60.8 percent capacity.
