UNCW women’s golf team concludes Landfall Tradition

The UNC Wilmington women’s golf team hosted the 10th annual Landfall Invitational this weekend at the Nicklaus Course in Landfall Country Club. Although the Seahawks were the host team, there was no home advantage.

The Seahawks finished in 18th place as they posted a team score of 969 (+105).

UNCW struggled to hang with a tough tournament field that consisted of 16 of the top-40 teams in the country.

The players had to battle through cold temperatures and strong winds that made the course tougher than usual and forced most of the scores to be over par.

“The kids really had to adjust and had to get the feel in their hands when the weather was cold and windy,” UNCW coach Cindy Ho said. “It makes you play safer and more conservative. You have to know when you can attack a tough pin placement. You have to know when par or bogey is not going to kill you.”

Although much of the team struggled throughout the tournament, Sofia Hagsund was one of the team’s bright spots. Hagsund, a senior from Sweden, has been selected to the all-conference team the past two years. Sunday, she carded a round of 77 (+5), which put her in a three-way tie for 13th overall.

“Sofia had a great tournament,” Ho said. “She played very consistently for us, and it shows her level of experience being able to handle the pressure and a difficult golf course. She’s a very smart player and she stuck to the game plan.”

The Landfall Invitational was the last tournament scheduled for the Seahawks in the fall, which gives the team time to improve.

“We’re still a young team with three of our starters being underclassmen,” Ho said. “We have to just improve our game, day by day. A lot of the problems were related to decision making, which we can control, and means we have to play with more discipline.”

UNCW will not compete in a tournament until late February when they begin the spring schedule with a tournament in Florida.
