Panthers put away Seahawks

Coming off an embarrassing loss to Towson, which had previously lost 41 consecutive games, the UNC Wilmington men’s basketball team was back in the comfy confines of Trask Coliseum looking for a win over Georgia State. The Seahawks came out flat to start the game and never caught up, losing to the Panthers 68-53.

Sophomore Donte Morales led the Seahawks in scoring, putting up 14 points and shooting 5-of-12 from the floor. UNCW had no answer for the Panthers down low though, allowing GSU to put up 38 points in the paint–17 coming from Eric Buckner.

UNCW couldn’t end its losing ways, collecting its seventh loss in eight games. When asked about whether this losing streak would affect a young Seahawk team’s confidence, Morales didn’t think confidence was the issue.

“It’s not about us losing confidence,” Morales said. “We just need a spark. I think we just need to get back to the drawing board, and have everyone look inside themselves so we’ll all stick together, and not let this pull us apart.”

“While it may not seem like it by the way we’ve been playing, we’re all still close in the locker room,” Morales added. “The games just aren’t going the way we want them to go.”

Coach Buzz Peterson has been here before, and knows that while this team is young, they have to keep working hard. “As we go through times like this, no one is going to feel sorry for us. We have to keep working hard,” Peterson said. “I thought the effort was there in a lot of places.”

The Seahawks look to right the ship Saturday night, when they continue CAA play and host William & Mary.
