The UNC Wilmington track & field team triumphed, which partnered with East Carolina University, at the fourth-annual Beaches vs. Mountains meet. The Seahawks and Pirates competed against Appalachian State and Western Carolina University. The constant rain did not hold back any of the athletes’ ability to set new records.

Senior Rebecca Boulay set a personal and school record at her last home meet. Boulay finished in second for the 800 Meter Run with a blistering time of 2:12.92. “We’re all really happy for her,” UNCW coach Jim Sprecher said. “What makes this meet special is that most of the athletes are former high school competitors. They have histories; you get some great performances.”

Wil Zahorodny and Connor Brooks also broke records. Zahorodny ran in the 1500 and 3000 meter run with a time of 3:50.41 and 8:47.65. Brooks completed the 400 meter run in 48.36.

The women’s “beach” team was able to put an easy margin of forty points above the “mountains” after Krista Mangum led the team in the 100 meter hurdles. This put the beach team at 118.5 to the mountains to 86.5.

On the men’s side, the battle was closer. Jeremy Johnson placed first in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.64, bringing the UNCW and ECU’s score to 150.5, and ASU and WCU to 133.5.

Overall, the men’s beaches group won 354.5 to the mountains 310.5 and the women’s beaches won 353 to the mountains 321. It was a successful final home meet of the season for the Seahawks before competing in the Florida Relays.
