The 33rd-ranked UNC Wilmington men’s tennis team squared off against Texas-San Antonio at home, Sunday afternoon. Coming back from a pair of road losses this week, the Seahawks came away with a 5-2 non-conference victory over the Roadrunners.

“We never go in doing anything different,” coach Mait DuBois said, explaining the team’s attitude. “That is never the mentality. Our guys hate to lose, and I think that playing the way they wanted was really important. This team hasn’t lost two matches in a row in years.”

The Seahawks took off immediately by winning all three doubles matches giving them a 1-0 advantage led by juniors Chris Cooprider and Kosta Blank with a decisive 8-4 victory. The No. 3 team of Kaue Pereira and Pedro Mol wrapped up the point with an easy 8-3 win.

The singles play came next with Pereira finishing quickly 6-4 and 6-0 alongside Michael Reilly to give the Seahawks a 3-0 lead.

Mol, playing No. 2 singles, contributed to the UNCW victory by beating his opponent 6-3 and 6-4. This was Mol’s first time in the No. 2 spot this season, and DuBois was impressed by his performance. “He has been very solid for us with a three win-win streak. We made a big change to his game style, and he really embraced it,” he said. “I am very proud of how he’s handled that.”

Sam Williams battled hard in the last match on the court to give the Seahawks the final win of the afternoon. Williams went 6-4 and 4-6 before pulling through 6-3 in the third set.

The Seahawks’ losses came into play with Cooprider dropping both by scores of 5-7 and 2-6, followed by Blank who battled to 3-6 and 6-7 results.

UNCW’s next match will be Friday at 2 p.m. when it hosts DePaul at the UNCW Tennis Complex.
