Corvettes, Post-It Notes, Anthony Davis make Kentucky favorite to win national title

Cam Ellis | Staff Writer

Throughout this series of NCAA Tournament commentaries, I like to think I have made my message clear: I don’t know college basketball. I can think of several writers on our staff that are more qualified to write about college basketball, because they probably know more and are better writers. But, you’re stuck with me for one final game. And what a game it is.

The 2012 National Championship. Big, bad Kentucky takes on scrappy Kansas in a battle of top-notch talent pitted against the will to win. It’s Kentucky superstar Anthony Davis versus Kansas superstar Thomas Robinson. It’s the coach everyone loves in Kansas’ Bill Self against the devil himself –and notable UNCW alumnus John Calipari.

Kansas is a group of players that epitomize “team play.” No one in particular stands out, but they all play at a high level. Kentucky is a glorified four-lane expressway from high school algebra to the NBA lottery (The juries’ still out on which one is worse). It’s obvious that both teams have their pros and cons, but let’s look a little deeper into what being a part of Kansas and Kentucky entails.

Chevrolet Corvettes are manufactured in Kentucky, although I’m sure blue-chip college basketball recruits totally don’t know anything about that. At one time, it was illegal to serve ice cream with cherry pie in Kansas. This round goes to Kentucky. Not allowing me ice cream is the quickest way to lose my respect (*cough* Mom *cough*).

Pikeville, Ky. annually leads the nation in per capita consumption of Pepsi-Cola. The American Institute of Baking is located in Manhattan, Kan.. This round goes to Kansas. I’m a Coca-Cola guy, so a state supporting Pepsi just isn’t going to fly in my book. Also, an entire institute of baked goods sounds amazing.

Post-It Notes are manufactured exclusively in Cynthiana, Ky. The exact number made annually of these popular notes is a trade secret. A ball of twine in Cawker City, Kan. measures over 38 feet in circumference and weighs more than 16,750 pounds and is still growing. Round three goes to Kentucky. Post-Its are incredibly convenient, and I appreciate the humor behind the company keeping its annual number a secret. Wouldn’t want that kind of information floating around for everyone to see. It also kind of creeps me out that the world’s largest ball of twine keeps growing–how does that happen?

Kansas won the award for most beautiful license plate for the wheat plate design issued in 1981. Can’t compete with that, Kansas wins round four.

So as of now, we are tied 2-2. I’ll decide the tiebreaker on things that actually matter, like say, basketball. Anthony Davis averages like 89 blocks a game, but the Wildcats will have their hands full with Kansas point guard Tyshawn Taylor. I think Davis and crew are too talented to lose. They’ve cruised all postseason, and I think they cruise again Monday night, winning by 12.

That’s my pick; I’m actually pretty sure it’s going to be right. Oh, the irony.
