The UNC Wilmington men’s tennis team continued its winning ways, as the Seahawks captured their fourth consecutive victory, Sunday afternoon with a 6-1 victory over Old Dominion University in their first conference match of the season.

Although this was only their first encounter with a fellow CAA member this spring season, the outcome was never in doubt from the start.

The No. 35-ranked Seahawks (13-4) jumped out to 1-0 lead over the Monarchs (10-9) after they won the doubles series 2-1. Juniors Chris Cooprider and Kosta Blank moved their record for the No. 1 doubles spot to 13-3 on the season with their 8-3 victory over Can Cetinel and Fahoum Fahoum.

Pedro Mol and Rafael Aita then followed suit and clinched the point for UNCW when they defeated their opponents 8-5 at the No. 3 spot, while the freshmen duo of Michael Reilly and Sam Williams were upended, 8-4.

“We did a good job today. We dominated on a few courts and showed what we can do,” said freshman Zach Hublitz. “Overall, I think we did pretty well in both doubles and singles.”

UNCW then continued its dominance into the singles matches where they won all but one decision. Kaue Pereira pushed UNCW’s lead to 2-0 with his 6-3 and 7-5 victory at the No. 5 position. Then, at the No. 1 single spot, Aita was able to bounce back from last week’s loss at Campbell to win his 11th match of the season with a 6-2 and 6-2 victory.

Blank then secured the overall match win for the Seahawks with his 7-5 and 6-1 victory at the No. 4 spot, 7-5, 6-1, making the score 4-0 UNCW.

Cooprider continued the team’s success with a 6-4 and 6-4 victory, and Mol was able to come back and win his match 6-3, 0-6 and 6-3 at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions, respectively.

Williams dropped a close one at No. 6 6-7, 7-5 and 6-10, giving ODU its lone point.

“We’re looking to finish strong in the regular season,” said Hublitz. “We want to win our next conference game and be able to peak at the right time during the conference tournament.”

The Seahawks only have three more regular season games before the CAA Tournament, beginning when they travel to Atlanta, Ga., Saturday to take on Troy University.
