UNCW squeezes out thrilling win in 10 innings

The UNC Wilmington baseball team pulled out a nail-biting 4-3 win Sunday afternoon in the bottom of the 10th inning to complete a series sweep of Old Dominion University. The Seahawks fought hard offensively and defensively the entire game to push their record to 15-12 overall, including a league leading 10-2 mark in CAA play.

Down 3-2 in the bottom of the ninth inning with two outs and two strikes, junior Tyler Molinaro (2-for-5) lined a double down the left field line to drive in Michael Bass for the tying run.

“They were telling me in the dugout that the pitcher was really working the outside part of the plate,” said Molinaro, who is the defending co-CAA Player of the Week. “I tried to take away the outer half and hit something the other way. I knew we had Michael Bass at second and he’s got great speed, so I knew anything past the infield would tie the game.”

After Molinaro’s double sent the game into extra innings, UNCW was in a jam in the 10th as ODU loaded the bases with just one out. However, the Seahawks were able to escape without any damage as junior Tyler DeLoach forced an inning-ending double play.

In the bottom half, the Seahawks led off with back-to-back walks from Hunter Ridge and Josh Abshire. A sacrifice bunt from catcher Drew Farber moved them to second and third, respectively, with only one out, which brought Jake Koenig to the plate.

After working the count to 2-1, coach Mark Scalf called for a squeeze bunt. The next pitch Ridge broke from third and Koening put down a perfect bunt that allowed Ridge to slide in safely for the win.

“Just get the bunt down,” Koening said after being mobbed by his teammates. “I knew we would win if I got it down and luckily I did.”

Freshman Jordan Ramsey, who was CAA Rookie of the Week, turned in another great start on the mound. He pitched 7 1/3 innings and gave up two runs on three Monarch hits, but he only earned a no decision.

“He certainly pitched well enough to win,” said Scalf. “Unfortunately for him, the last batter he faced he walked, and he scored the tying run. But overall, I thought he was outstanding. He threw the ball very well most of the day, and he really gave us a chance to win.”

The series sweep was the second time UNCW has swept a conference series this year. UNCW hosts East Carolina, Tuesday at 6:30 p.m.
