Big talk before the big game

“There’s not a man alive who can whoop me. I’m too fast. I’m too smart. I’m too pretty. I should be a postage stamp. That’s the only way I’ll ever get licked.” – Muhammad Ali.

Trash talk has always been a major part of professional sports. If you didn’t think there’d ever be a bigger trash talker than Muhammad Ali, then you haven’t been introduced to Richard Sherman. Sherman is a cornerback for the Seattle Seahawks, who are squaring up against the Denver Broncos this Sunday in Super Bowl XLVIII. Sherman is known for his trash talking antics in the NFL, which have led to a number of controversies. One of his most memorable moments was the now-infamous “U mad Bro?” tweet he sent out after playing the Patriots in an October 2012 game.

Most recently, Sherman was highlighted for his post-game interview after the NFC Championship game against the San Francisco 49ers. Sherman made a great play, knocking away the would-be game winning touchdown pass that 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick threw to wide receiver Michael Crabtree. Yet immediately after this seemingly blissful moment, Sherman partook in a post-game interview with Erin Andrews, which led to one of the most infamous post-game quotes ever to take place on national television.

“I’m the best corner in the game.” Sherman said, “When you try me with a sorry receiver like Crabtree, that’s the result you’re going to get. Don’t you ever talk about me. […] Don’t you open your mouth about the best or I’m going to shut it for you real quick.”

Sherman later explained that his on-air rant was an “in the moment” outburst and apologized for it. Even with a swift apology, the interview caught the attention of the league, media and fans. Kaepernick even commented on it, saying that Sherman was “scared of their receivers.”

Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning also got his share of the trash-talk in during the days leading up to the big game. Sherman said that Manning threw up “ducks,” implying that Peyton had very little arm strength. Manning responded, reminding Sherman that this season he’s thrown up 5,477 yards of “ducks” and 55 touchdowns.

Regardless of what Sherman’s motives were, he’s got his fair share of competition coming up this Sunday. He’ll be competing against one of the best quarterbacks to ever play the game, equipped with an impressive group of talented wide receivers.

Sherman definitely has made a name for himself in the league, and while the cornerback position is not often a position that’s nationally highlighted, it certainly will be this Sunday. The amount of trash talking from the Seattle defense has set the tone for this game, as if there wasn’t enough pressure already. It’s sure to be an intense battle between two of the most talented teams in the NFL, and the unique battle between the talented cornerback and legendary quarterback will take center stage.
