Aidan Smith during his first career at-bat in UNCWs matchup with VMI on Apr. 1, 2022 at Brooks Field.

When the lights come on: A moment that was worth the wait for UNCW’s Aidan Smith

Zachary Kilby, Sports Editor April 5, 2022
WILMINGTON, North Carolina – In the bottom of the eighth inning during UNCW’s Friday night matchup with VMI, Aidan Smith did something he had never done before in his three-year career. He played in a college baseball game. To many, Smith’s pinch-hit plate appearance in the ladder stages of an eventual 18-1 blowout win over the Keydets seemed rather insignificant. However, for Smith, it was the opportunity he had patiently been waiting for.

OPINION: The ethicality of making students live in dorms

Emma Geiszler, Staff Writer April 3, 2022
UNCW has the ability to consistently improve, and the main place to start should be creating the best possible environment for students by getting to the root of their everyday lives. At it’s heart, this environment relies on finances, a good home environment and healthy living. This should be the area of focus for improving students' well-being.

3 easy recipes for college students

Tristan Rathbun, Staff Writer March 29, 2022
Most college students don’t yet realize how easy it is to cook. We expect it to require time, labor and skill that we don’t have, but that is far from the truth. Do you have a pot, a stove, a knife and a cutting board? That’s all you need! Here are three simple recipes that I often turn to when I’m hungry, busy and don’t want to do too many dishes. It should be noted that the spice suggestions are low to accommodate milder tastes, but feel free to increase the measurements as needed.

UNCW student podcast ‘Trauma Tuesdays’ is for the girls

Emma Geiszler, Staff Writer March 10, 2022
College is an especially hard time period to make friends, made worse recently by a pandemic that limits socialization. It is a time period when students can feel like they don’t know anything. “Trauma Tuesdays” doesn’t try to know more but rather learns and moves alongside their audience like a group of friends would. The learning curve is different for everyone in college, and friends, whether present personally or through a podcast, help the journey along.

UNCW professors share their experiences in band ‘The Schoolboys’

Giancarlo Franzese, Contributing Writer February 3, 2022
When it comes down to talent here at UNCW, The Schoolboys is one to consider, as this band continues to amaze both on and off campus. Members of the band including UNCW professors James Hunt, Rick Olsen and Bill Bolduc share their experiences, each having an important role as a member of the Schoolboys. Olsen, chair of the communication studies department, is in charge of vocals, harmonica and the keyboard. Olsen’s main responsibility involves singing lots of lead vocals for the band’s catalog while Bolduc covers guitar and back-up vocals. Hunt’s role is to provide the beat and vocals for The Schoolboys.

A closer look at the chancellor search committee

Amanda Leahey, Contributing Writer January 17, 2022
There will be a new person at the top of UNCW’s chain of command come July, and the university is currently in the process of finding out who that person will be. Since Chancellor Jose Sartarelli's retirement announcement in September, UNCW has been searching for a new chancellor. Part of this process is the formation of an 18-member search committee charged with identifying and recommending chancellor candidates to the UNCW board of trustees. That was accomplished on Oct. 13, and since then there have been seven public forums where committee members heard feedback from the UNCW community. Feedback from these sessions helped the committee craft leadership statements to draw in potential candidates that fit the university's needs.

6 ways UNCW students can reduce their environmental impact

Grace Hall, Contributing Writer January 11, 2022
The call to our generation to reduce our impact on the environment is stronger than ever, with mounting evidence that ecosystems are failing, the ozone layer is being depleted, and climate change is real. If we are not actively protecting our planet, we are working against it. Without further ado, these are some things you can do as a college student at UNCW that may reduce your impact on the one and only planet earth.

Sophia Pruett on her journey on YouTube and in life

Abigail Celoria, Contributing Writer November 4, 2021
In recent years, YouTube has become an unexpected expert source for students just beginning the college search. Many universities found unofficial spokespeople in YouTube lifestyle vloggers. The popularity of the genre has allowed ordinary college students to take over the online space, posting day-in-my-life vlogs, homework tips and tricks, outfit try-ons and more. For high schoolers looking forward to this new phase of life, these YouTubers provide an inside look into the real college experience. UNCW has its own unofficial representative in Sophia Pruett, a senior who has been documenting her college career since its beginning.
