Director and Documentarian, Morgan Spurlock , to Speak at UNCW

Director Morgan Spurlock, best known for his documentary “Super Size Me,” will be speaking Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. in Kenan Auditorium. Spurlock’s upcoming lecture about his new film, “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold,” promises to be both humorous and educational.

“Morgan Spurlock utilizes comedy to explain the reality of society. His film shows the influence of marketing and advertising on the world, even if we, as viewers, don’t realize it”, said Shane Fernando, director of arts and programs at UNCW.

“The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” takes a unique and somewhat ironic stance on advertising; in the film, Spurlock sells himself to the highest bidder in the corporate advertising world. Posters promoting the movie feature Spurlock covered in various stickers, including POM Wonderful, JetBlue Airways, Mini Cooper cars, and Amy’s Kitchen foods.

As a documentarian, “Spurlock sheds light on things we’ve accepted,” said student Al Ganey.

Similar to his film “Super Size Me,” “The Greatest Movie Ever Sold” presents information in a way that leaves the spectator free to draw their own conclusions.

“I feel Spurlock’s way of educating by means of comedy makes his subject matter relevant to a younger, college-aged audience,” said student Sara Pezzoni.

This audience doesn’t always recognize Spurlock by name, but they do know his work.

On “Super Size Me,” Ganey said, “I don’t think it’s intelligent to assume that Spurlock was the whole reason there was a change in consumer culture…but I will say that his film was the straw that broke the camel’s back.”

Ganey went on to say that he believed “Super Size Me” had a large cultural impact on students and many others.

“While there has been community expressed interest, I feel that Spurlock is primarily a student focused speaker. He was chosen for his appeal to students,” said Fernando.

Speakers in the Leadership Lecture Series are chosen prior to the beginning season by a committee formed of students and faculty members. Often speakers are cosponsored by various organizations on campus. Spurlock’s lecture is sponsored by UNCW Student Media and ACE.

“He was a logical choice really, chosen for his affiliation with media related fields,” said Bill DiNome, student media coordinator.

After the lecture there will be an audience Q & A and book signing. Merchandise will be available for purchase from the UNCW bookstore, including Spurlock’s movies.

“I hope students will take away from Spurlock’s lecture a mindset of questioning everything. Question the world, think for themselves,” said Fernando.

Tickets are available at etix.com or at the Kenan box office. $9 for the general public, free for UNCW students and faculty.
