Halloween fashion 2013 edition: scary is no longer in

From animal suits to Miley Cyrus’ twerking bears, Halloween is no longer the spook fest that it used to be. Instead, partygoers are opting for tv-inspired outfits and creative couple costumes.

Store managers and sales associates around the Wilmington area weighed in on which costumes are popular this year, and the answers were surprising.

Morph suits and movies

Apparently dressing up like a green man is still in style this year, said Derek Tiller, Halloween and More store manager.

“Morph suits are huge— people love those things,” Tiller said.

Morph suits are skin-tight one-piece garments that cover the whole body, including the face.

Dressing up in camouflage and a beard seems to be just as appealing to Tiller’s customers.

“Anything ‘Duck Dynasty’ is pretty big as far as TV things go,” he said. “’Iron Man III’ costumes and flapper costumes [like the ones in ‘The Great Gatsby’] have also been selling.”

The variety of costumes available appeals to all Halloween enthusiasts.

“I feel like a lot more females have been doing animals this year,” Tiller said.

Halloween and More offers both complete animal costumes and animal-themed accessories.

A little whimsy or a lot of attitude

Things went a little differently at Party City—Disney Channel and peanut butter and jelly sandwiches have taken over their stock rooms, but not for long.

“A lot of our ‘Despicable Me’ costumes are selling, along with our Candy Corn Witch costume and our ‘Monster High’-themed costumes,” said Trina Singlebary, a sales associate at the Party City on New Centre Drive.

However, some ladies are getting fierce and purchasing police and SWAT outfits.

“As far as female costumes go, the policewoman costume that looks like a cat suit has been selling a lot, along with the SWAT team dress,” Singlebary said.

There are also a considerable amount of women who want to do Halloween with their significant others, so couples costumes have been popular as well.

“Most women come in with their significant other and buy couple outfits,” said David Owens, another sales associate at Party City. “We are actually out of our peanut butter and jelly costumes.”

Miley’s Twerking Teddies…enough said

Miley Cyrus was sure to come up in this Halloween costume search, and by the time the Spirit Halloween Superstore manager got on the phone, Miley was all he could talk about.

“The twerking teddy costume from the VMAs and the twerk suit worn by Robin Thicke are absolutely sold out right now,” said manager Joe Soria.

So, there you have it. Minions, super heroes, sexy civil servants and an army of teddy-bear-twerking Miley Cyruses will be parading around Wilmington this Halloween. You might want to get your costume before the stores are sold out. You don’t want to be stuck being something “scary” for this year.
