Laughter is the Best Medicine

Among all of the health fads and medical debates, there is one saying that remains true; laughter is the best medicine, and in Wilmington, Dead Crow Comedy Room is the best place to get your daily dose.

“It’s one of the best jobs I’ve ever had,” said Cole Craven, co-owner of the Dead Crow Comedy Room. “There’s not a lot of money in it but you come in and see 100 people laughing their asses off and it’s kind of therapeutic.”

Dead Crow re-opened their doors in June 2014, after the previous comedy club in Wilmington closed. Craven and his business partner Timmy Sherrill decided to replace the old comedy club and worked together to find the perfect place and name. The idea for the name came from Sherrill’s production company and a sketch of a crow. “Most comedy club names seem silly, and we didn’t want that. Dead Crow was easy to brand and it felt right,” said Sherrill.

Since re-opening their doors just over a year and a half ago, they have seen big and small names alike perform on their small stage. Trevor Noah (host of “The Daily Show”), Michael Che (“Weekend Update” co-anchor) and Jon Reep (NBC’s “Last Comic Standing”) have all visited Wilmington to perform. Actor and comedian Tim Meadows (“SNL” and “Mean Girls”) will perform there in December.

Aside from hosting nationally known comedians on the weekends, the Dead Crow also offers opportunities for local comedians to perform. During the week, they have Comedy Bingo on Tuesdays, Improv night on Wednesdays and Open Mic on Thursdays. Both Tuesday and Thursday nights are free ($3 cover charge if you’re under 21) and Wednesday nights are only $3.

Although the majority of Dead Crow’s patrons are not college students, they want to see that change and they hope more students will come check them out. “I’ve met people who went to school in a town with a comedy club and it’s a good memory for them. We have great entertainment and cheap food, which is perfect for college kids,” said Sherrill.

According to Craven, some of the brightest up-and-comers on Open Mic night are from UNCW. “I’m a huge fan of comedy and [the Dead Crow] is great for that because it has a really intimate setting,” said Nicole Dempsey, junior at UNCW. “Students should come here because it’s a great, cheap way to have fun with a group of friends.”

Craven and Sherrill hope to see Dead Crow expand in the next five years and possibly bring in even bigger names. “Our goal is to be one of the top five things to do in Wilmington,” said Sherrill. “I’d like to see Dave Chappelle come do a 100 seater. Whether [big names] come perform or not, I’d like to see them at least stop in and hang out.”

The Dead Crow Comedy Room has food and drink specials throughout the week, including $2 tacos on Tuesdays. Upcoming tickets for weekend shows can be purchased online or won on Tuesdays at Comedy Bingo. The comedy club is located at 265 N. Front St. and is open Tuesday- Saturday.
