OPINION: Crime is not always black and white

Peyton Lewis, Copy Editor November 11, 2024

July 1993 marked the opening of a murder trial that would quickly go down as one of the most infamous trials in American history. On Aug. 20 1989, the Beverly Hills, Ca. Police Department were called...

REVIEW: ‘Tokyo Vice’ is an immersive, stylish and clever neon noir vision of 90s Japan

Boyce Rucker, Staff Writer April 9, 2022
HBO Max’s “Tokyo Vice” takes us into late 1990s Japan, where the Yakuza presence affects the way policemen investigate crime and an American reporter’s efforts to write the truth. The series is based on the 2009 memoir of the same name by journalist Jake Adelstein, the first non-Japanese reporter for one of Japan’s largest newspapers, the Yomiuri Shimbun. Serving as the pilot’s director and executive producer, filmmaker Michael Mann makes a return to television after a long absence. A master of crime drama, Mann implants his distinctive procedural style and noir elements into the series. Based on its first three episodes, “Tokyo Vice'' is one of the most stylish and clever crime shows to grace streaming this year.

REVIEW: Lady Gaga lends dramatic quality to the biographical drama ‘House of Gucci’

Boyce Rucker, Intern November 28, 2021
The casting for the movie is exceptional, but Gaga gives a larger-than-life performance. Gaga’s pop star persona is barely noticeable here as she immerses herself into the role of Patrizia. Although Patrizia is still alive, Gaga refused to meet with her as she did not want to fuel Patrizia’s self-glorification for her former husband’s murder. Choosing to focus on videos and interview clips instead, Gaga replicates Patrizia’s mannerisms, Italian accent and fashion choices.

REVIEW: ‘Dopesick’ gives faces to the opioid crisis

Abigail Celoria, Contributing Writer November 19, 2021
Hulu’s “Dopesick” is everything a show of its genre should be—real, gritty, gut-wrenching; and yet enjoyable, socially illuminating and ultimately encouraging. It gives form to a drug crisis known only vaguely to some, but so full of meaning for others, both educating and comforting in its approach. Keaton’s Dr. Finnix is not likely to be forgotten with his closing monologue in the final episode—pain is a part of life, and in working to overcome it, we might find our better selves.

REVIEW: ‘The Oxy Kingpins’ mainlines a shot of reality to Cucalorus 2021

Niko Giammanco, Contributing Writer November 13, 2021
Like a “sit-down” between Big Pharma and “The Godfather,” “The Oxy Kingpins,” a documentary directed by Brendan Fitzgerald (also known for Gaycation) and Nick August-Perna (also known for The Swell Season), delivers an in-your-face take on the hypocrisy of capitalism and its ability to skirt justice for the sake of money, causing the intentional pain of millions of addicted Americans, with no hint of remorse insight.
Sarah Paulson as Linda Tripp and Beanie Feldstein as Monica Lewinsky in "Impeachment: American Crime Story."

REVIEW: ‘American Crime Story: Impeachment’ offers a chilling take on the Clinton-Lewinsky scandal

Boyce Rucker, Intern September 11, 2021
While it’s still too early to tell if “American Crime Story: Impeachment” is as great as its predecessors in the “American Crime Story” series, the premiere shows a promise of strong, quality storytelling. The episode stands out for the depth given to each character through the combination of writing and strong acting performances.

Brenna Flanagan, Lifestyles Assistant Editor February 2, 2019
Our favorite “Gossip Girl” creeper, Dan Humphrey, leveled up in Netflix's newly acquired series “You” as a full-fledged stalker sociopath. The 10-episode first season, based on the book by Caroline Kepnes, contains just enough teen genre stars to catch your attention.
