REVIEW: ‘American Horror Stories” offers nostalgia and not much else

Boyce Rucker, Contributing Writer July 17, 2021
t creating an initial sense of unease and tension, but the effect devolves due to the writing and its reliance on shock factor. The first part recaptures the groundedness of “AHS: Murder House” and creates a somewhat moody atmosphere that can be attributed to the production design of the house’s interior, the ambient musical score and the dark cinematography.
Emma Berman, Jacob Tremblay, and Jack Dylan Grazer in Luca (2021).

REVIEW: ‘Luca’ is a simple flick that defies the traditional Pixar structure, for better or worse

Abigail Celoria, Contributing Writer June 23, 2021
In animation quality, “Luca” is certainly up to par with its predecessors—while the underwater world is visually sparse, the characters and the seaside village are both beautiful to look at, with a fluid cartoonish style to them. However, this film is divergent from the other traditional elements of Pixar—namely, the plot and the emotional themes.
Angelina Jolie and Jon Bernthal in Those Who Wish Me Dead (2021).

REVIEW: ‘Those Who Wish Me Dead’ is a thriller incapable of igniting excitement and offering resolutions

Boyce Rucker, Contributing Writer May 19, 2021
Having been established as an original and expressive voice in modern cinema, it should not come as a surprise that major companies like Warner Bros. would seek him out. Released in theaters and to HBO Max on May 14, 2021, “Those Who Wish Me Dead” is the latest feature film to be both co-written and directed by Sheridan. The film appears to be much more commercialized compared to his previous films; however, the film falls flat due to the degradation of what made his most notable films stand out.
Jessie Mei Li in Shadow and Bone (2021).

REVIEW: Netflix’s ‘Shadow and Bone’ series is what a screen adaptation should look like

Kaylin Damico, Photography Editor April 29, 2021
When a book gets a screen adaptation, there is always the fear that the world and the characters will not be portrayed properly. With Bardugo as an executive producer, Netflix was able to incorporate the important details to maintain the novel’s integrity on the screen. The first episode alone will have you entranced by the world of the “Grishaverse” and its characters.
