UNCW mourns loss of student

A UNCW sophomore was killed in a car accident returning to school from a family trip to Key West, Fla., during Spring Break.

Daniel Thomas McGregor, a 20-year-old from Cary, died last Saturday morning due to injuries he suffered from a car accident. McGregor was studying business and computer science. He graduated with honors from Apex High School in 2001, where he was a member of the school’s tennis team and an avid street hockey player, boater and snowboard enthusiast. After his freshman year at UNCW, he was accepted into the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, where he formed new friendships and volunteered as a tutor to elementary school students. “He was always the life of the party, and he always had a smile on his face,” said Matt Salerno, president of Delta Tau Delta. “Danny always had a smile on his face and I can never remember him being in a bad mood. He is someone you know you can talk to and count on for anything,” said Ian Nott, also a Delta Tau Delta fraternity brother. McGregor loved hanging out with his friends and participating in fraternity and community events. McGregor was very active in the Delta Tau Delta community service and fund-raising events, such as Adopt-A-School, Adopt-A-Spot and Relay for Life. “It’s just the things he did. He was always looking out for his friends, making sure no one was driving under the influence,” Nott said. “If he was designated driver, he would drive until the early morning hours because he wanted to make sure his fraternity brothers or friends made it home safely.” Many students traveled to Apex for the wake and funeral services March 19, 2003 at New Horizons Fellowship Church. Delta Tau Delta had an on-campus memorial service Tuesday in honor of Daniel McGregor.
