UNCW’s men’s soccer squad posted back-to-back shutouts, Oct. 24 and 25 as the Seahawks enhanced their quest for a top six finish in the CAA regular-season standings and earn a conference tournament berth.

The 1-0 win over Drexel and the 0-0 draw at Hofstra lifted the squad to 10-5-2 overall and 4-3-1 in league play. The Seahawks return to action Nov. 1 with a trip to VCU.

Goalkeeper Brad Knighton stonewalled the Pride in the second half, stopping 10 Hofstra shots (Knighton had 12 overall) as the freshman fended off an avalanche goal attempt. The home team outshot UNCW 18-2 after halftime.

Knighton preserved his eighth shutout of the season in the final moments with a diving save off a Rishi Matadeen header.

The night before, Dustin Efird headed in a Daniel Butner cross 3:06 into the match as the Seahawks topped Drexel.

The Dragons outshot UNCW 15-12.

Women’s Soccer

Tiffany Langford saved eight shots and earned a shutout against Old Dominion Oct. 24 as the Seahawks went 0-1-1 on a road swing through Virginia.

ODU outshot the visitors 17-9 in the CAA match.

The trip ended on a down note as William & Mary stopped UNCW 4-1 Oct. 26. Freshman midfielder Justine Hammer scored the Seahawks’ goal off a Kristine Mengle pass late in the first half.

The Seahawks ended the weekend with an 8-7-2, 2-3-2 mark. The squad ends the regular season with a pair of home games. UNCW takes on Towson Oct. 30 at 7 p.m. and hosts Delaware Nov. 1 at 2.

Both games will be held at UNCW Soccer Stadium.

Women’s Golf

UNCW finished tied for tenth at Furman’s Lady Paladin Invitational Oct. 24-26.

The Seahawks finished with a 312-309-315 936, 72 strokes over par and 10 shots behind ninth place Michigan.

Georgia cruised to victory, carding an 866, 26 strokes ahead of Tulsa.

Becky Berzonski led UNCW individually with a 24th place finish. The junior finished with a score of 76-75-77 228.

Volleyball

When it rains, it pours.

The Seahawks dropped their fifth and sixth consecutive matches Oct. 24 and 25 with a pair of losses to Towson and George Mason.

UNCW lost both games in 3-0 sweeps. The squad dropped to 5-16, 1-8 and return to action Oct. 31 at Delaware.
