Nick Swardson selected for 2008 Spring Show
The Association for Campus Entertainment revealed Nick Swardson as the 2008 Spring Show performer. ACE surprised the audience at the “Reno 911!” comedians show Saturday night with the decision. There were three finalists this year: recording artist Ben Folds, comedian Nick Swardson and comedian Zach Galifianakis.
“This year ACE put in two bids. We first put one in for Ben Folds, but his schedule changed to where he was no longer a possibility. After that, and seeing that this year’s survey still showed a high interest for comedic acts, Nick Swardson was our next choice,” ACE President Kim Joyce said.
The most popular request by students for the Spring Show performer was comedian Dane Cook; however, Cook does not perform for venues the size of Trask Coliseum, which seats approximately 4,200. He only plays major cities with venues seating 7,000 or more. Even if he agreed to play Trask Coliseum, Cook’s asking price is several hundred thousand dollars.
“ACE is not able to afford an act of this size given our budget,” Joyce said. “Another component of Dane Cook and his availabilities is his main focus is film, not college shows.”
More within ACE’s budget, Swardson’s performance fee is $30,000. He is most known for his acting roles in “Grandma’s Boy,” “Blades of Glory,” “Reno 911!” and his stand-up performances on Comedy Central.
“Of course I’m going to go,” said Greg Desloge, a senior finance major. “If you have seen any movies with him, you know he is hilarious.”
The 2008 ACE Spring Show is scheduled for April 19 at Kenan Auditorium. It has not been determined when tickets go on sale, but they will cost $15 for students, $20 for faculty and staff and $25 for the general public.
