On Monday, Nov. 4th, UNCW Men’s Basketball began their 2024-25 with a massive win versus non-conference team University of Mount Olive . Trask Stadium was packed with fans of all ages: students, families and alumni. The Wilmington community showed out for the regular season opener of UNCW’s most promising basketball team yet.
With a solid roster of reliable returning players, as well as the additions of a few freshmen and transfers, the natural chemistry between the players is working in the team’s favor. The Seahawks held the lead from the tipoff, never falling behind the Trojans pointwise. The energy in the stadium was electric and fueled the team’s fire, which led them to finish the first half with a record-breaking 81 points scored, only allowing the Trojans to score 43. Eighty one points is the most points ever scored in a half in UNCW history. Holding on to that momentum, the Seahawks claimed another 62 points, finishing the home opener by breaking another record and bringing their game total to 143 (143-91)— the most points ever scored in a basketball game in UNCW history. The previous record was made in 2016 against the Pfieffer Falcons with 126 points.
Returning as head coach for the fourth consecutive year at UNCW, Takayo Siddle just continues to add to his impressive resume. Siddle led the Seahawks to their first away win over a ranked team last year versus #12 Kentucky. He was named CAA Coach of the Year in 2021-22 season and has led the team to multiple tournament victories, 2021-22 conference victory and is continuing to break school records.
Leading the team was graduate student Bo Montgomery (#0) playing 24 minutes and scoring 22 points. Not far behind was junior Noah Ross (#5) playing 19 minutes and scoring a career best 19 points. Six other players also broke double digit points in this game: junior Harlan Obioha (#55) with 17 points, graduate student Joshua Corbin (#32) with 16 points, redshirt junior Jake Murphy (#8) with a career best 15 points, graduate student Donovan Newby (#1) with 15 points, junior Greedy Williams (#7) with 11 points and Sean Moore (#3) with 10 points.
This dynamic start to the season provides the Seahawks with an optimistic look ahead of a challenging season. Schedules for UNCW men’s and women’s basketball teams can be found on their social media and on the UNCW athletics website.
