UNCW will host a screening of FOX’s “Our Kind of People” in Lumina Theater on Sunday after the ban on student space reservations was lifted on Thursday.

The event, which will feature a screening of the series premiere and a Q&A with the cast, is sponsored by the Upperman African American Cultural Center and UNCW’s division of student affairs. Campus Life, which oversees Lumina Theater, will support the event as well.

This event comes after an email to student organization leaders that allows students to again make reservations in campus spaces. Student reservations in Campus Life or any other campus buildings are being reviewed by a student affairs committee to determine the event’s safety.

According to Stefanie Norris, interim executive director of Campus Life, Disney, FOX’s parent company, has completed “safety checks” of Lumina in advance of this event, which is reserved for 100 people.

“Our Kind of People” is a series filmed in Wilmington and premiering on Sept. 21. People attending the screening will get a sneak peek of the show and attend a Q&A with the cast.

UNCW’s Aug. 24 announcement to cancel major events and bar in-person meetings came less than a week after the semester started. Per the email, UNCW made the decision to limit large gatherings given the high transmission rates in New Hanover County and the spike in COVID-19 cases in the campus community.
