Seahawks sweep VCU in opening series

WILMINGTON, North Carolina – UNC Wilmington (3-0) used a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the ninth inning on Friday night to start off a three-game sweep over visiting VCU (0-3) at Brooks Field.

Game 1: UNCW 5, VCU 4

After tailing 4-2 heading into the last inning, the Seahawks used a late rally and game-winning walk to cap off a three run ninth.

Jac Croom tied the game with an RBI single and eventually scored the game-winning run after Chris Thorburn took ball four.

Landen Roupp started the day on the mound for the Hawks. The CAA Preseason Player of the Year went 5.2 innings and allowed only one run.

Game 2: UNCW 4, VCU 1

Brooks Baldwin started things off fast for UNCW after knocking a solo homerun in the bottom of the first.

Luke Gesell pitched five innings for the Seahawks, while only allowing one run on three hits. The Rams would be held to only one run after UNCW’s bullpen closed the door, led by Bryce Cota and Cody Benton who picked up the save.

Game 3: UNCW 9, VCU 5

Croom led the way offensively for the Hawks, finishing Sunday’s doubleheader with three hits and three runs scored.

UNCW’s Adam Smith finished things off and got the save to finish off a three-game sweep over visiting VCU.

Looking Ahead

The Seahawks will host Western Carolina Feb. 26-28 for a three-game series. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon at Brooks Field.
