On Oct. 2, 12-time NBA all-star and defending NBA champion LeBron James of the Cleveland Cavaliers proclaimed his support for Hillary Clinton. James made his endorsement by publishing an op-ed article in the Business Insider and the Akron Beacon Journal.

“Only one person running truly understands the struggles of an Akron child born into poverty… That candidate is Hillary Clinton,” James said.

Throughout James’s op-ed, he mentioned specific issues that currently affect his home of Akron, Ohio and the African-American community at large.

“She wants to make sure kids have access to a good education, no matter what zip code they live in,” James said. “She’ll rebuild schools that are falling apart… She also has plans to make college a reality for more people in America, especially for those who can’t afford it.”

These points brought up by James fit in his portfolio of political activism.

In the last five years alone, James has led his former team, the Miami Heat, in a protest of the shooting of Trayvon Martin, encouraged current teammate Kyrie Irving to join him in wearing an “I Can’t Breathe” t-shirt for Eric Garner and advocated for stricter gun laws in Ohio after a five-month-old girl was killed in a drive-by shooting last October.

“There’s no room for guns, first of all, but then for violence towards kids or anybody,” he said. “But having kids of your own, I see the news go across my phone and I’m sitting there in front of my three kids, so it automatically just hit me… It’s also the whole nation that goes through this as well. We all hurt from it,” James said, according to Ohio.com.

According to Vanity Fair, James’s endorsement comes at an opportune time for Clinton.

“A victory for Trump in less than six weeks hinges on winning Ohio and its 18 electoral votes. Right now, the New York billionaire is enjoying a 3.8-point edge, on average, in the polls in the battleground state, thanks in part to the state ‘growing older, whiter and less educated than the nation at large.’”

Without stooping to speculation, Vanity Fair recognizes that for Trump “to triumph over Clinton,” he will need more than just the “white vote.” Now, with King James on her bench, it may be Clinton’s time to close out this seven-game series for good.

With the 2016 election becoming ever-more important in the eyes of the American people, only time will tell if more prominent athletes come forward with their own political endorsements instead of remaining in the dark as they have in the past.
