HEMPSTEAD, New York – UNCW (3-8) lost their seventh straight 72-59 to Hofstra (5-10) Saturday afternoon in the Mack Sports Complex.

Although the Lady Hawks started out strong, leading after the first quarter, the Pride’s 25-point second quarter allowed them to pull ahead with the Seahawks trailing just out of reach for the remainder of the game.

Neither team shot particularly well from behind the arc, but the Pride shot 45% from the field with the Seahawks only shooting 39.3%, which allowed Hofstra to dominate in the paint with 42 points, over UNCW’s 26.

Redshirt junior forward Jaylen Hines and junior guard JaKayla Brown both scored 20 points for the Pride also adding seven and five rebounds. Junior guard Jahsyni Knight had 13 points, five steals and three rebounds with redshirt junior forward Jaala Henry chipping in six points and eight rebounds.

Despite the loss, the Lady Hawks committed fewer personal fouls than Hofstra, marking their 11th consecutive game with this statistic.

Junior guard Za’Nautica Downs and senior forward Carol Anne-Obusek carried the Seahawks in this one, their combined points adding up to 41 of UNCW’s 59 total points. Downs scored 23, had five assists and one rebound, her seventh game in a row with double digits. Anne-Obusek scored 18 with 11 rebounds, her fourth double-double of the season, and her second consecutive game in double figures. The other major contributor for the Hawks was first-year guard Mary McMillan who chipped in nine points and two rebounds.

UNCW will try to break their losing streak in game two against the Pride tomorrow at 2 p.m.
