WILMINGTON – UNCW’s Lady Seahawks returned to the court this afternoon with a matchup against Norfolk State (0-1) to begin the 2020-21 campaign. The Seahawks walked out of Trask Coliseum 1-0 on the young season after defeating the Spartans 67-47.

Second-chance points were a major reason why the Seahawks came away with the 20 point victory. UNCW dominated Norfolk State on the glass, grabbing a total of 19 offensive rebounds through four quarters of play, while the Spartans could only acquire seven of their own.

Junior guard Camille Downs was the leading scorer for the Seahawks, pouring in 21 points while shooting 3-7 from downtown. UNCW Freshman Taylor Webster nearly matched the Spartans’ rebound total on her own, snatching a game-high 19 boards.

Both teams struggled taking care of the ball. The Spartans lost it a total of 14 times while the Seahawks gave it away 20. Ball security will be a major area of emphasis moving forward for both squads.

The Lady Hawks will face off against Campbell (0-1) inside of Trask Coliseum on Nov. 28 at 2 p.m. The game will be the last of a two-game homestand before heading to Orangeburg, South Carolina to take on South Carolina State.
