Staff photographer Ben Jackson tagged along with the UNCW Sailing Team at their weekly practice to discover what this unique UNCW club is all about. These students take advantage of any opportunity they can find to get out on the water and catch the wind in their sails. It’s easy to see what makes the sport so easy to fall in love with. Veteran sailor and senior Graham Shivers, when asked why he loves sailing so much, explains that his favorite part is “teaching people a new skill and enjoying the water’s natural beauty”.

They go out to practice as a team three times a week, every Monday, Wednesday and Friday. They also compete on a national level at sailing competitions, known as regattas. Their schedule was heavily impacted by the recent hurricane, but they were still able to attend a recent regatta and placed 4th in the field, outpacing the Duke Blue Devils, Georgia Bulldogs and Tennessee Volunteers.
