Two goal deficit not enough for Christopher Newport to put away UNCW club hockey
The UNCW club hockey team defeated Christopher Newport Friday night by a final score of 3-2.
Christopher Newport frustrated the Seahawks early, causing UNCW to have a slow first period and fall behind 1-0 early after a power-play goal from the Captains Eric Rindfleisch.
“It was a 1-0 game and we just needed to keep playing our game,” said assistant coach Matt Huestis.
Christopher Newport’s Ryan Brown added a power-play goal with about four minutes to go in the second period to make it 2-0 Captains. Bennett Clark’s shorthanded goal with 30 seconds left in the period brought the Seahawks to within one goal.
Joey Alexander and Logan Young added two goals off rebounds to help propel the Seahawks to a 3-2 lead in the third period.
“Once we were able to control the puck more and get easier breakouts, we were able to score some goals,” said Huestis.
Seahawks did suffer an injury in the third period to their second-leading scorer Hunter Phillips, which forced the Seahawks to adjust on the fly.
“Hunter is a strong player and he is kind of irreplaceable,” said Huestis. “The team did a great job adapting with their new linemates in the third period. But hopefully, he will be alright since he is a really strong player.”
The Seahawks will finish their weekend with Christopher Newport on Saturday with the game scheduled to begin at 4:30 p.m.
