On Friday, April 22, Chancellor Sartarelli delivered his final address and 28th report to the UNCW Board of Trustees at their quarterly meeting. The chancellor’s retirement in June will end his nearly seven years of employment at the university, during which UNCW experienced the highest rate of growth in the UNC system. Sartarelli’s time as chancellor has been marked by both academic and economic successes as well as social backlash and controversy.

UNCW Chancellor Jose Sartarelli will retire in June according to an email sent to faculty, staff and students on Friday. The email included a personal statement from the chancellor as well as a commemorative summary of his accomplishments since he took office in the summer of 2015.

Following heated debates throughout the summer, the Wilmington City Council approved a “Black Lives Matter” mural on August 19. On Sunday, September 27, the mural was installed around Third Street and Jervay Place. The painted letters spell out “Black Lives Do Matter,” followed by a road-sign inspired diamond that reads, “End Racism Now.” Each letter was painted by a local artist, and the mural is set to stay up for one year.
