SGA holds runoff elections

Lizz Wood April 5, 2011

The candidates for Student Body President and Vice-President were expecting cheers or tears when they heard the results of the election, but instead were left with a question mark. Because none of the candidates received 50 percent of the votes, a run-off election will decide the winner.

SGA mandates that the Student Body President and Vice-President will earn a majority of the total votes cast, and none of the candidates reached this requirement. Voters will have a limited amount of time to re-vote for their favorite candidate, because voting is only open Monday and Tuesday, April 4 and 5. Of the three initial candidates, only two will be moving on to the run-off election: Ronda Jackson with Michael Croal, and Sammy Pisano with Brooke Britt.

"When I was told I was in the run off I was very excited. Sitting there waiting for the results was very nerve racking so when my name was called it was great," Jackson said. "We all knew that a run-off was inevitable."

Pisano is looking at the run-off as something positive. He said, "Competition breeds excellence. No one is guaranteed a position in SGA, and as candidates, we must work hard to stand out. UNCW voters had a difficult decision on their hands, but I am confident that in the end it will be what is best for this university."

Candidates for other the other presidential positions, however, were elected and the results are the following: senior class president: Whitney Kornegay;junior class president:Will Taylor;and sophomore class president:Shannon Morris.
