They are calling it “The Catch.” If wide receiver Julian Edelman hadn’t made that catch, the greatest comeback in Super Bowl history may never have happened and the New England Patriots wouldn’t have been Super Bowl champions. In one of the greatest comebacks in Super Bowl history, Tom Brady and the New England Patriots defeated the Atlanta Falcons in Super Bowl LI, 34-28, on Feb. 5.

The game started with two punts by each team and a scoreless first quarter. On the Patriots’ third drive, LeGarrette Blount fumbled in Atlanta territory, letting league MVP Matt Ryan respond with an impressive 71-yard scoring drive.

After another three-and-out for New England, Ryan led the Falcons for another easy scoring drive. The ensuing Patriots drive seemed promising, thanks to three defensive holding penalties leading to  first downs, but Brady threw a costly interception on the Atlanta 23-yard line that was returned by Robert Alford for a touchdown.

The Patriots closed out the first half with a 41-yard Stephen Gostkowski field goal, bringing the score at intermission to 21-3. Matt Ryan ended the first half with a perfect 158.3 passer rating.

After Atlanta scored another touchdown to make it 28-3, the game seemed to be over. According to ESPN.com, during the Patriot’s next drive, the Falcons had a win probability of 99.7% percent.

But after that point, New England scored points on all five of their final possessions to close out the game. Of those five drives, two ended with two-point conversions.

On their final four drives, the Falcons only gained a total of 44 yards.

The Patriots’ record comeback led to the first ever overtime period in Super Bowl history. The period only lasted four minutes, as the New England scored on the opening possession of overtime to ultimately win the game.

Brady, who was selected as the game’s MVP, attempted a record 62 passes and completed 43 for 466 yards. His top receiver for the game, running back James White, had a Super Bowl record 14 receptions for 110 receiving yards.

“We’re all going to remember this for the rest of our life,” Brady said in his post-game interview on NFL Network. Brady, who now owns five Super Bowl titles, passed Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the quarterback with the most Super Bowl victories.

There were a total of 24 Super Bowl records set and another seven records were tied, making Super Bowl LI one of the most historic ever.

Patriots owner Robert Kraft, who is no stranger to the Super Bowl stage, told Fox Sports’s Terry Bradshaw that of all the Super Bowls he has been to, “this is unequivocally the sweetest.”

On the other side of the ball, the Falcons were in shock, mostly by the difference in defensive play from the first half to the second.

“As a defense, we kind of lost a little bit of aggression during the game,” Falcons’ rookie linebacker De’Vondre Campbell said afterwards.

Seeing that the Patriots’ offense had possession for over 40 minutes of the 64-minute game, it is easy to see how fatigue might have played a factor in the Falcons’ defensive meltdown.

In the end, Tom Brady and Bill Belichick won their fifth Super Bowl ring together in spectacular fashion and further instilled themselves as obvious candidates for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
