SGA sends out surveys to improve campus life

The Student Government Association sent out a survey via e-mail Jan. 22 to all UNCW students. The survey asked students 14 questions about their approval or disapproval of several programs. These programs are currently offered or are proposed to be offered by the university. “We wanted to get the students involved,” said Jessica Madden, SGA academic affairs committee chair and at-large representative. “We are a liaison between the students and the faculty. We will take the survey to the faculty senate once we’ve tallied the results,” Madden said. One of the main goals that the SGA wants to accomplish with the help of this survey is to standardize the campus grading system. According to Madden, many students do not approve of the fact that grading patterns vary from professor to professor. The SGA hopes to gather students’ opinions on other matters as well. These include the proposed building of a campus parking deck, extension of campus dining hours, implementation of a laptop requirement and an increase in student fees. The parking deck issue is one of major concern to students due to the current parking situation problems. The building of a campus parking deck would cause parking decal fees to increase from $172 to $242. With the proposed construction and expansion of bicycle lanes around campus, many students who want to offset this fee may choose to bike to campus. Students also have the choice to voice their opinion of providing shuttle services to downtown Wilmington, allowing students who live in and around the downtown area to ride the shuttle to campus. The Wilmington transit authority currently provides free shuttle and bus services to UNCW students. Another component of the survey is to educate students about services offered by the SGA. These services include safe ride, discounted faxing, free legal consultation and discounted movie tickets. SGA sophomore class representative Laura McComb stresses the benefits of students participating in this survey to the SGA. “To represent the student body fully we must, as a body, develop a strategy (by way of the student survey), in order to represent their voice,” McComb said. The SGA also wants students to learn that they can freely address their issues to the SGA. “We want the students to come to us with any concern they have,” Madden said.
