Where Paris Hilton goes to die, movie fans are sure to follow
This is the true story of four celebrities who were cast in a horror film and whose producer allowed MTV crews to tape their lives. Watch as these actors stop getting the star treatment and start copping an attitude. This is the making of, “House of Wax.”
With today’s technology, a few publicity stunts for upcoming movie release can be expected. For example, a website, television trailers, and a premier are usually the extent. But, “Wax’s” producer, Joel Silver (“The Matrix”), has pulled out all the stops to make his film a success. First, Silver picked a movie that was a classic and ready for a remake. In this case, remake the 1953 film of the same name, starring Vincent Price, to follow the trend of “Texas Chainsaw” and “The Amityville Horror”. Then, he cast a group of hot young talent.
Staring as brother and sister, Chad Michael Murray (“One Tree Hill”) and Elisha Cuthbert (“Girl Next Door”) lead a group of friends on a road trip to a college football game. After the decision to camp out, the group finds themselves with car trouble, stuck in a strange town and in the midst of a surprising life-like wax museum.
Oh, and of course, and in the path of a crazed killer.
The next way to capture a lot of publicity is to add something the media can’t stay away from. Since Britney is pregnant, Silver picked the next best thing, a hotel heiress. Media favorite, Paris Hilton makes her feature film debut as blonde bombshell Paige Edwards, who’s flawless figure may or may not become the next addition to the wax house.
Stop the press! What does a producer do when an A-list celebrity like Hilton accidentally slips that she “has the hottest death scene”? What else, advertise it. Once Paris slipped on the shortcomings of her character, Silver decided to use it as a marketing scheme. With approval of The WB and the heiress herself, Silver had “Watch Paris Die” t-shirts made and distributed to draw more audiences in. Whether you love Paris and want to see her shot at big screen fame, or you hate her and can not wait to see her take her last breath, it still brings the studio what it wants, money.
Finally, in the age that is defined by reality television, why not have MTV document the making of the film? Over the past several weeks, MTV has been airing, “Movie Life: House of Wax”, which follows Murray, Hilton, Cuthbert and Jared Padalecki (Dean of “Gilmore Girls”) as Cuthbert’s boyfriend. The show has shown highlights of the film making process on location in Australia. Some of these features include; the burning down of an entire sound stage after a candle caught a set on fire, Hilton’s constant hounding by Paparazzi, Murray’s proposal to “OTH” co-star Sophia Bush, Padalecki’s “wax test,” Hilton’s first day anxiety attack and Murray’s trauma with his not-so-manly new canine.
Throw in trailers constantly airing on MTV, The WB, and during Hilton’s Fox reality show, “The Simple Life,” plus add a few mobile downloads, screen savers and instant messenger icons, all the bases have been covered and the word is out, “House of Wax” is out in May. Whether on not this film will live up to its hype or to the classic on which it is based is yet to be foretold. But with the roller coaster of drama that this production has gone through, it will be worth the seven dollars just to see if it was all worth it. So, as you pack up after finals and make your way on that long lonely rode toward home, remember three words: Prey. Slay. Display.
