Last stand for swimming seniors

Senior Eric Boyer and the Seahawk men swam their way past .500 this Saturday, sweeping Davidson (199-93) and Colonial rival William and Mary (187.5-100.5) to improve to 6-4.

The Seahawks touched the wall first in 12-of-16 events, and for the second straight week, Boyer swept the 50 and 100-meter freestyle.

“I’m very pleased with how I am swimming right now,” Boyer said. “As a team, we’re undefeated in conference right now, so I think we are pretty unstoppable and are in a good position for another win.”

A packed house watched from above as the Seahawks swam to victory at their last home meet of the season, and for the seniors, the last home meet of their college careers.

“It’s always better to be at home-just to be in your own pool, in your own environment. You’re around all your friends and family; the whole experience is a lot better. It’s all bittersweet, but it’s good to go out with a win,” Boyer said.

“It’s strange to think we suddenly became the leaders. It seemed like only yesterday we were the freshman, and now we [the seniors] are leading the freshman into conference,” senior Patrick McCarthy said. “I don’t think it will hit us that it’s all over until after conference.”

The Seahawk’s defeat over conference rival William and Mary didn’t just add another win to their record; it boosted the team’s confidence too.

“This was a big meet for both teams. All season, we knew William and Mary was going to be a team we needed to keep an eye on. Knowing that everybody stepped up and performed way better than we expected gives us that extra confidence to go into conference,” McCarthy said. “It definitely got us psyched up.”

The Seahawk women also defeated conference rival William and Mary (155-145) and Davidson (238-61). Sophomore Danielle Mortensen took first in the 1,000 and 500-meter freestyle with season-best times.

The five-year-in-a-row CAA champion Seahawks swim at College of Charleston Jan. 27, and the 2006 CAA champion women’s squad take on Campbell at home on Feb. 3. Both men’s and women’s teams make the journey to Fairfax, Va., for the CAA conference meet Feb. 14-17, and in the meantime plan on keep training hard until that point.
