Volleyball faces competitive conference

3-22, 5-23 and 8-25. Those are the results of the Seahawk volleyball team from 2004 to 2006, respectively.

Coach Jennifer McCall began her tenure at UNCW in 2004 and has had some difficult seasons thus far. The Seahawks are 1-50 in conference play since McCall took over as head coach and have lost 22 straight conference matches.

The past three years haven’t been easy on McCall and her two returning seniors, but they have remained positive coming into the 2007 season.

“They are a competitive group,” McCall said. “We worked very hard this off season on the court and in the weight room. They are a positive group of girls, and they continually motivate each other.”

The Seahawks’ high moral has led them to an improved season, as their record is 6-10 following a loss Saturday to Virginia Commonwealth University.

In the CAA the top six teams make the conference tournament. From the beginning of the year McCall made getting to the tournament a top priority.

“Entering the season we wanted to start out strong out of conference, but our ultimate goal is making to conference tournament,” she said.

The Seahawks are 0-2 in conference as of Saturday but hope to quickly turn things around.

“We have added some strong young players, and I think we can be competitive in a difficult conference such as the CAA,” McCall said.

With 15 games left in the season the Seahawks have the opportunity to make a dramatic improvement from seasons past.

Senior Jill Hoeck attributes this year’s success to a newfound confidence.

“When we walk in the gym, we don’t come in and want to win, we expect to win” Hoeck said.

She also has noticed that this years team has greater chemistry than her previous three teams.

“All of us are really close off the court. We are so close you can see it,” Hoeck said. ” Each girl worked extremely hard on their individual game in the off-season, but when we get on the court we act as a team.”

Both McCall and Hoeck expect that the program will only take off from here.

Hoeck said the team is quick to learn and improve, and she envisions that the team will have many victories ahead of them. The Seahawks look to accomplish something this season that they haven’t accomplished in 10 years: finish the year with a winning record.

But even if that doesn’t happen this year, the Seahawks are confident that they will begin to be competitive in the very near future.
