New home for the baseball team

Long gone are the days where baseball players change in small, dirty locker rooms with a single long bench and rusted lockers. Today’s athletes are pampered with more and more off field perks, and the UNCW baseball team is no exception.

The Seahawks will be spending their time before games this season in the brand new Fisher Fieldhouse, dedicated to Herbert J. Fisher who gave $200,000 to help refurbish the new building. Don’t let the Fisher Fieldhouse’s modest architectural design fool you, the interior is anything but. The building contains a flat screen television lounge, meeting room, offices, washing facilities, and not to mention hand crafted wood lockers for each player. The Fieldhouse closely resembles a major league clubhouse.

Coach Mark Scalf feels that the Fieldhouse is perfect for UNCW baseball. “Its a beautiful facility,” Scalf said. “It fulfills a lot of our needs as a team. The storage, office space, and gathering are are great for our coaching staff as well.

But that’s not to say the Seahawks haven’t deserved it. UNCW has been CAA champions in 2004 and 2006 and finished first in the regular season in 2003 and 2005. The Seahawks have been the team to beat this decade and continue to achieve success.

The Fisher Fieldhouse is a well deserved luxury for a club that often gets overshadowed by the team who plays across campus in Trask Coliseum. But maybe the new building will bring attention to a team who’s play really speaks for itself. The Seahawks look to win their third CAA championship in five years, and if they do indeed capture this, they certainly have a place to celebrate. “(The Fieldhouse) gives the players a home for them to come together and build relationships. Its really good for our team.”
