Seahawks salvage series with Mason

The UNCW baseball team recovered from a heavy defet in game-one against George Mason to win on consecutive days and secure another Colonial Athletic Association sweep.

The Patriots began the weekend with sizzling bats as they plated double digit runs in a 13-3 drubbing of the Seahawks on Friday. The Seahawks found themselves in a large hole early as Mason teed off for three home runs, one a grand slam in the fifth inning to give the Patriots an insurmountable 9-2 lead. The four-run shot was the second slam allowed by the Seahawks in as many games.

The Saturday afternoon game proved to be a polar opposite of Friday night’s rout as the score was flipped and the Seahawks came away with a 10-0 shutout win.

With the Seahawks clinging to a 1-0 lead, they used an explosive seven-run seventh inning to blow the game wide open. Two big hits keyed the Seahawks big outburst as sophomore outfielder Bobby Leeper unhinged a two-run double before senior Nate Hall delivered a double of his own, this time scoring three. Hall went 3-for-5 on the day knocking out three doubles and three RBIs.

The Seahawks’ capped the scoring in the eighth when senior catcher Mark Carver continued his brilliant season at the plate blasting a two-run homer to complete the win. The home run was Carver’s 19th on the season and puts him just two shy of tying the school’s single season record of 21.

The Seahawks victory on Saturday set up the weekend’s rubber match and once again, the home side came out on top with an 8-3 win.

Senior pitcher Jeff Hatcher turned in a long performance, stretching his start into eight solid innings allowing only three runs as he boosted his record to 5-0 this season. As in the previous game, the Seahawks’ bats were decisive with seniors Jes Snyder and Carver once again leading the way.

Snyder tallied three hits, one a two-run homer, on his way to a three-RBI day while Carver inched his way to yet another school record.

The Seahawk slugger knocked in two runs, giving him 70 for the season. Carver now needs only four more RBIs in the final eight regular season games to give him the most ever RBIs in a single-season by a Seahawk.

The series win keeps the Seahawks at the top of the CAA standings and a likely candidate for an at-large berth into the NCAA tournament should they falter in conference post-season play.

With a record 35-11-1, the Seahawks still cling to a national ranking as they are currently 29th in the Baseball America poll.

The Seahawks will wrap-up their regular season at home with a three-game series against Old Dominion May 15-17.
