Seahawks Upset #20 Furman

The UNCW men’s soccer team produced a stunning come from behind effort Sunday to knock off 20th-ranked Furman in overtime. The Seahawks entered the final minute of the match trailing 2-1 before junior forward Devan Carroll poked home the equalizer with just seven seconds remaining on the clock.

The highly competitive match saw the Seahawks carve out several chances to open the scoring before they finally took a 1-0 lead through defender Indy Smith. Smith converted from short range after collecting fellow defender Jon Kearns’ shot which ricocheted off the crossbar.

Following the goal, the Seahawks dropped in and tried to hold on for what would be an impressive upset. However, their plans took a huge hit 16 minutes from time when midfielder Daniel Roberts was shown a red card, forcing the Seahawks to play a man down for the rest of the match.

“The referee said it was for language. I didn’t hear it. It was definitely disappointing,” Head Coach Aidan Heaney said regarding Roberts’ ejection.

The red card greatly affected the Seahawks’ offensive threat as Heaney was forced to insert an extra player into the defense and play the remainder of the match with just one striker.

“We dropped in and played with one forward hoping to spring something on a counter attack,” Heaney said.

Furman was able to use the man advantage to level the score at 1-1 in the 80th minute and proceeded to take the lead with just one minute remaining.

Facing a heart-breaking defeat, the Seahawks poured everyone forward in the final minute hoping for a miracle. That miracle became reality with seven seconds left.

Seahawks’ goal scorer Smith turned provider as he flicked a long throw-in into a cloud of players in the Furman box. After a moment of chaos, the ball fell to Carroll’s feet and he calmly slipped a short range shot into the net.

“We just had to push everyone forward, Indy flicked it on to me and I tucked it away,” Carroll said of the goal.

The Seahawks’ continued to weather a storm of Furman chances in the first overtime period before they stole the winner in the 104th minute. Freshman striker Matt Brown latched onto a Seahawk clearance and outran the Furman defense to grab the sudden death goal.

“This says a lot about our fitness,” Carroll said referring to fighting back with a man disadvantage. “We’ve worked hard in preseason and it showed today.”

None were more pleased with the team’s effort than Heaney.

“It’s a great result against a good side. We kept believing and our effort made the difference. It was truly Herculean,” he said.
