Taylor hits points milestone; moves into all-time top four

Seahawk forward Sahsha Taylor saved herself a place in the UNCW record books as she became the fourth highest scorer in Seahawk women’s basketball history. Taylor, a fifth- year senior from Charlotte, N.C. scored her 1,316th point Thursday against the Delaware Blue Hens.

“I don’t really keep track of the records,” Taylor said modestly. “My dad is usually the one who tells me about that stuff.”

Taylor’s father, Ronald Taylor, is easily her biggest fan. “My dad keeps all my posters and pictures in his office,” she said. “He always keeps me motivated and lets me know when I’ve broken a big record.”

And Taylor knows a thing or two about big records. In this month alone she has climbed two spots in UNCW all-time scoring, passing Elizabeth Bell for fifth against William & Mary and Chondra Watkins for fourth against Towson. She is also second all-time in free throws made, free throws attempted, and minutes played. She is fifth in blocked shots and sixth in both rebounds and steals. Taylor sits alone atop the UNCW record books for games played, a testament to her toughness.

Taylor came into UNCW as a guard but was forced to change her style of play due to a meniscus injury that caused her to red-shirt her freshman season.

“I was more agile before my injury,” she said. “It was harder for me to drive to the basket after that and I had to adjust. That’s when I became more of a post player.”

Taylor has adapted well as she has been featured as a go-to scorer every year for the Seahawks. Although she has put in a great deal of hard work to obtain her level of success, Taylor is quick to acknowledge others that have helped her.

“I’ve been successful because of my coach and teammates. I’m Lucky to have a coach who wants me to be a threat in the offense and players who support my goals and accomplishments.”

Taylor admits that team chemistry has played a large role in her success as a Seahawk.

“My teammates and I do whatever it takes to win, whether it be making the basket, boxing out or making the extra pass,” she said. “It’s like a sisterhood out here. We all help each other out.”

Taylor has used a team-first attitude to propel her way up the all-time scoring list, which seems unusual for today’s athlete. Fans are accustomed to seeing players shoot a countless number of shots and try to take over games in order to reach a scoring record. Taylor often doesn’t even have the most points in the box score. She has made history by playing consistent, team basketball and providing quality minutes every game.

By the end of the season, Taylor will have the opportunity to move up another spot on the points list. If she averages just over 16 points a game she will pass Tressa Reese for third all-time. Gwen Austin, who scored over 2,000 points for the Seahawks in the 1980s, is the leading scorer for the club.

Taylor and the Seahawks hope to continue their two-game win streak as they face George Mason on Thursday, Jan. 29, a team who UNCW beat twice last season.
