The UNC Wilmington softball team triumphed over George Mason Sunday afternoon by a final score of 5-4 in 11 innings. The win ends the series on a high note after two losses on Saturday.

UNCW lost the doubleheader to the Patriots with final scores of 2-0 and 8-3. Prior to this game, the Seahawks led the all-time series between the two conference foes, 22-16. UNCW joined the CAA league in 2004.

The Patriots displayed excellent hustle and team effort in the outfield as well as strong batting talent in the first inning, tallying two runs to take an early lead. But, in the second inning, the Seahawks quickly closed the gap.

Senior Katie Houmard stepped up to the plate with two of her teammates already on bases, sophomore Daniela Torres and freshman Kristen Jernigan. Houmard performed well under pressure, knocking a single to drive in one run.

Three additional runs in the second put the Seahawks in the lead. The Patriots caught up in the seventh inning, however, tying the score 4-4.

Tension was evident in the crowd as the game entered extra innings. Senior Kelsey Eddinger knocked the ball over the GMU centerfielder, allowing fellow senior Ashley Singleton to slide into home for the winning run in the bottom of the 11th.

Pitcher Amanda Davenport played a particularly strong game. A senior from Raleigh, Davenport started the game, and after being briefly replaced by a reliever, she checked back into the game to finish. She threw over 150 pitches.

The Seahawks’ record moved to 6-24 overall, including a 1-2 mark in the CAA.
