UNCW sirens alert students of tornado warning, no damage

No reports of tornado sightings or damage on UNCW’s main campus have come in after UNCW officials alerted students of a possible tornado on Monday, August 13. The sirens were not a drill.

We are waiting for a statement by UNCW to confirm there was no damage.

Emergency sirens sounded at 4:23 p.m., followed by an email alert at 4:24 p.m. asking students to seek shelter inside permanent buildings on the main campus. Students on Twitter reported receiving text warnings and tweets.

The warning was lifted at 4:43 p.m. when the reported tornado activity moved out of the area, and UNCW issued an all clear.

The email alert warned students to avoid modular buildings and facilities with wide span roofs, like Trask Coliseum and Burney Center, and to move to an interior hallway or room on the lowest floor of the building.
