UNCW warns campus of tropical storm weather from Hurricane Sandy

Haven’t seen the Tropical Storm Watch alert from UNCW in your email yet? Here it is:

“UNCW is monitoring the progress of Hurricane Sandy. New Hanover County and surrounding areas are under a Tropical Storm Watch, which means tropical storm conditions are possible for the next 48-72 hours.

The primary hazards associated with Sandy are heavy rains, gusty winds and dangerous surf conditions. The current forecast is from 2 to 4 inches of rain from Saturday morning through Sunday morning. Winds will be highest on the immediate coast and sustained winds of up to 35 mph are likely in Wilmington and scattered power outages are possible, although not anticipated to be long term.

These conditions may result in isolated flooding on and off campus. UNCW is working closely with our community partners and no closings or evacuations are warranted at this time.

Use extra caution when traveling and be aware of possible hazardous conditions in areas prone to flooding on campus, such as: the intersection of Reynolds Dr. and Cahill Dr., Seahawk Landing, Honors House Parking Lot and Parking Lot E, H and I. Off campus locations include New Centre Drive and Racine Drive. Some of these areas may be closed to traffic if heavy rain occurs.

Leave extra time to make commutes and do not attempt to drive through standing water. Additionally, conditions at area beaches will be extremely hazardous with higher wind gusts, extreme rip current risks and high surf.  Please do not enter the water during this extremely hazardous time.

UNCW is monitoring the storm and will provide updates as needed.”

If you take any pictures or video of the storm or damage from it, please send them to [email protected]. The Seahawk asks that you do not risk your personal safety or the safety of others in attaining footage.
