Some classes cancelled, relocated during Morton Hall gas leak

A gas leak in UNCW’s Morton Hall has interrupted classes, the fourth time this year that an HVAC malfunction has caused students to lose instruction time.

UNCW police responded to a call from Morton Hall about a possible gas leak at 7:23 a.m. Friday morning. The police cleared the building at 8:13 a.m., saying no smell was detected.

8 a.m. classes continued.

When 9 a.m. classes began, several professors sent their students home or relocated. One English class met instead at Java City in Randall Library-all other alternative classrooms in the library had been taken by other classes.

Several students confirmed on Twitter a rotten egg smell around 10 a.m., tweeting about having to stay in class with a “rotten egg smell.”

One student tweeted, “I love when Morton has a gas leak and everyone’s profs cancel their classes… but not mine.”

Classes are continuing at Morton Hall, unless professors individually cancel.
