In a battle of the top two teams in the conference, the CAA-leader UNC Wilmington baseball team took on visiting Delaware in the first game of a double-header on Saturday afternoon. The Seahawks were able to pad their conference lead with a 4-2 victory over the Blue Hens, ending their 13-game winning streak.

Delaware got on the board first when Jimmy Yezzo hit his eighth homerun of the season in the opening inning. Michael Bass then scored his team-leading 37th run of the season in the bottom of the first for the Seahawks, tying the score at 1-1.

The third inning was a good one for the Seahawks. They scored three runs in the to make the score 4-1. Delaware’s second baseman D.J. Long hit a homerun in the 4th to make it 4-2. It was a pretty much quiet game after that, with Mat Batts throwing five straight scoreless innings. Batts pitched his fourth straight complete game and ended the game with two straight strikeouts on just six pitches. UNCW has won their last four games.

Bass returned after missing the lat six games with an ankle injury, but he didn’t lose his touch. At his first three appearances at bat, Bass hit three straight singles. He finished the game with his first four-hit game of the season. As for Batts, he finished the game with eight strikeouts and allowed only two runs scored against him.

The Seahawks are still first in the CAA conference with a 25-10 overall record and an 8-1 conference record.
