New UNCW club summons gamers

A new gamers’ club has been created. For those of you that play League of Legends, the UNC Wilmington Summoner Club is the club for you.

If you do not know what League is, it’s usually described as a real-time strategy game, but it is also known as an MOBA, or multi-online battle arena. The game involves using teamwork and communication to take over the other team’s “nexus,” which is like a home base.

The Summoner Club has taken months to be approved and accepted by the university and it is still waiting to become an official chapter of the Riot Collegiate League groups.

The guys in charge of the UNCW club-Josh Coburn and Matt Simpson-originally had the idea back at the end of August, but it wasn’t until around Christmas break that the university officially approved the club.

Though the process took months, the guys didn’t have any trouble working with the school.

“CAIC was really supportive and friendly, and they wanted the club to be created correctly, which is why it took some time,” Simpson said.

Around March, the constitution step was also complete.

But why go through months of preliminary work to form a League of Legends club in the first place?

“[The] fun, tide-turning points in a game, such as stealing Baron from the opposite team, and then getting multi-kills and winning,” said Coburn.

The strategy involved can become addictive.

As far as becoming directly affiliated with Riot, the company that publishes League of Legends, Josh has plans to get that done soon. The only thing holding them back right now is that the club needs to have a faculty member club serve as an advisor who will contact Riot and do official paperwork. This is so Riot knows the club is okay with the school and not just some small thrown-together group.

Coburn has already contacted Riot to double-check that having the Summoner Club was legally acceptable. Riot assured him that they were good to go with the club.

The first Summoner meeting was successful, with a little over 20 people in attendance, though Coburn and Simpson are planning to expand beyond meetings. Next year, they’d like to organize some League tournaments. East Carolina University has hosted a tournament, and Coburn and Simpson believe that it is high time that UNCW hops on the League boat.

President Josh Coburn and vice president Matt Simpson will also be looking for members to fill other positions within the club.
