5 summer TV shows to get excited about

Jeff Winkle | Staff Writer

Do you ever feel like there’s something missing in the summer? Like there is something drastically different from the rest of the year? When your usual primetime shows come to a close at the end of the spring, it just seems like the daily routine is thrown off completely.

It doesn’t have to be that way, though.  Here is a list of the five summer shows that will have you looking forward to sunset so you can plop down on your couch with a big bowl of popcorn.

“Suits” on USA (July 16)

Suits should not only make this list of summer shows to look forward to, but should also be sitting pretty on the list of the top five shows on television.  It tells the story of a genius college dropout who found himself running with the wrong crowd and dealing drugs to get by.  On a deal gone bad, he finds himself stumbling into an interview at the best law firm in New York City.  He dazzles the interviewers and gets the job working under the tutelage of one of the city’s best lawyers.  The great writing is only eclipsed by the incredible acting and stellar cast.  This is a must-watch for everybody.

“The Newsroom” on HBO (July 14)

This Aaron Sorkin original series has received mixed reviews, but even the skeptical admit they are interested to see what comes next.  This show portrays a network news team as they cover the nation’s biggest breaking news stories.  Last season, we saw the crew attempt to report on stories such like the BP oil spill, the death of Bin Lade, and the assassination attempt of Gabrielle Giffords as honestly as possible.  This season, expect to see some of 2012’s biggest stories to be covered, as well as a script with a perfect blend of comedy and drama.

“Crossing Lines” on NBC (June 23)

This new NBC series was developed by the executive producer of “Criminal Minds.” The show follows detectives as they investigate serial crimes that cross European borders and hunt down global criminals.  It stars William Fichtner, who twisted the hearts of America as a special detective-addict who wasn’t afraid to cross the line when necessary in “Prison Break.”  Considering casting, it promises to be wild and thrilling. Global court is in session.

“Breaking Bad” on AMC (August 11)

Fans have been waiting almost a year for the conclusion to this Emmy-winning series.  This summer, AMC will air the final eight episodes of the series in which a high school chemistry teacher is diagnosed with cancer, so he decides to become a drug dealer to ensure financial security for his family. Expect the boundaries to be stretched and the tension to be at an all-time high.

“Whose Line Is It Anyway?” on CW (July 16)

What can I say about the show that brought America to know and love improvisational comedy? Fan favorites Wayne Brady, Ryan Stiles and Colin Mochrie return as the featured line-up in a show that hasn’t seen airtime since 2006.  Few changes were made as there will still be a different guest comedian every week, but host Drew Carey will be replaced by Aisha Tyler (“Friends” and “The Talk”).  Buckle up for  ten fresh episodes of hoedown, motown, rib-tickling improv.
